General Summary

The Department of Psychology at Eastern Michigan University announces an opening for a tenure-track assistant professor position with specific expertise in child clinical psychology starting August 2024. 

The Psychology Department at EMU has an APA-accredited Clinical Psychology PhD program, MS programs in General Clinical, Clinical-Behavioral, and Experimental Psychology, and approximately 800 undergraduate majors. The CBHC is a state-of-the-art facility, featuring a large play therapy area with accompanying observation room, as well as group therapy and individual therapy/assessment spaces, and is well-equipped for therapy and assessments with children and families. Faculty and students regularly use the CBHC to conduct clinical research, and the CBHC was recently accepted in the Racial Justice Competency Model Pilot Program for Public Health Professionals. The EMU campus is located in Ypsilanti, a vibrant small city in southeastern Michigan. “Ypsi”, as it’s affectionately known, is a welcoming city that has a unique vibe and an eclectic art scene. Ypsilanti is located five miles from downtown Ann Arbor and 35 miles west of Detroit, MI, and Windsor, Ontario.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teach contractual load of undergraduate and graduate courses as assigned by the department or school.

Assign and submit grades in accordance with established University schedules.

Keep posted office hours during the week which are scheduled at times most beneficial to students.

Provide academic advising to students, if applicable.

Serve on search committees for hiring of new faculty members, departmental committees and other service committees across the university.

Participate in activities such as student registration, orientation, convocations and commencements.

Attend and participate in scheduled departmental meetings and functions.

Provide other support service to the department, college and/or university, if applicable.

Engage in pursuits that enable them to remain current in their respective disciplines.

Engage in pursuits that help to further organize and contribute to growth of the body of knowledge in their respective disciplines, and/or to explore interdisciplinary implications.

Perform related Departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have their PhD in clinical psychology from an APA-accredited doctoral program and must be fully licensed as a clinical psychologist in the state of Michigan within one year of hire. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of a strong, transferable research program within the area of child clinical psychology (area of specialization within child/adolescent clinical psychology is open). The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses and should demonstrate the ability to teach relevant courses in child/family therapy, assessment, and development to a culturally diverse student body. Candidates are also expected to mentor graduate student thesis and dissertation research and to supervise doctoral students in evidence-based child/family intervention and/or assessment at our on-site departmental training clinic, the Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CBHC), as part of their teaching load. Candidates who can supervise student-clinicians seeing cases across the lifespan are also encouraged to apply. Faculty who are actively involved in doctoral mentoring receive a reduced teaching load of six credits (approximately two courses) per semester. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in department and university-level committees and establish a research program with student participation at all levels.
