General Summary

The Academic Human Resources Generalist is responsible for supporting all aspects of human resources operations. With a focus on promoting a positive client-centered Academic Human Resources department and organizational culture, the AHR Generalist will independently coordinate, plan and prioritize tasks according to time constraints and deadlines.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance in supporting client needs and requests in the areas of compensation, employment/classification, employee relations, training (annual and semi-annual instructional) and organizational development. Respond to general contractual questions or make the appropriate referral.
  • Manage and monitor licenses and/or certifications required for certain academic disciplines.
  • Coordinate all PERA, FOIA and other data requests.
  • Provide organizational and analytical support to AHR Operations; organization/definition of workflows and process improvement initiatives; generate, process and maintain AHR-related forms and correspondence.
  • Serve on cross-functional teams and undertake projects of moderate complexity related to Academic Human Resources Programs and objectives.
  • Process unemployment claims received for Faculty, Full-Time Lecturers and Part-Time Lecturers.
  • Manage and process verifications of employment for all academic employees as needed.
  • Recommend to management, and where authorized, implement improvements in systems, processes and procedures that will increase the effectiveness of the department.
  • Assist with creating, reviewing, coordinating, and distributing various communications including Dean/DH/SD meeting agendas, emails, newsletters, brown bag lunch session information to support DH/SDs and Department Secretaries.
  • Perform related departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of human resources management as well as employment procedures and practices and related federal & state laws, as typically acquired by the completion of a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration majoring in Human Resources Management, Organization Development, or a related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Three years of professional Human Resources work experience is required (Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).

High degree of discretion when dealing with confidential information is required.

Effective conflict management skills are required (e.g. diffuse emotionally charged situations, clearly identify issues and clearly communicate procedures for resolving issues, work with the customer to develop a resolution acceptable to the customer and the work unit).

Personal computing skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database management software applications are required.

Excellent customer service, critical thinking/problem solving, data analysis, written and interpersonal communication skills are required.

Highly organized; responsible and responsive; able to manage many projects with competing priorities and deadlines; exhibit follow-through in accomplishing tasks is required.

Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws is required.

Exemplary, regular, and predictable attendance is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of Google Suite (Docs, Sheets and Forms), Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Adobe and Crystal Reports is preferred.

Experience in a higher education/union environment is preferred.
