Director of the School of Engineering

The School of Engineering at the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, Eastern Michigan University is accepting applications for a School Director. The successful candidate will administer and direct the developmental, personnel, financial, and operational activities of the School of Engineering in collaboration with faculty. SE offers computer and electrical engineering technology, and ABET-accredited programs in electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, and product design engineering technology. The College also offers graduate programs in computer aided engineering, engineering management, quality management, and polymers and coatings.

 

Duties of the School Director include:

  • Manage the school budget for personnel services, supplies, maintenance and equipment, and other grants and contracts.
  • Ensure alignment of departmental goals with college and university goals.
  • Provide school leadership in the development of new initiatives and programs and revision of existing ones.
  • Evaluate faculty performance for tenure, promotion, and supplemental salary adjustment recommendations to the Dean of the College.
  • Schedule school course offerings with input from program coordinators and Instruction Committee.
  • Facilitate the development of school course offerings and new programs with input from the school faculty and Instructional Committee.
  • Support students and faculty regarding such matters as curricular requirements, transfer of courses, availability of classes, and academic problems and/or grievances.
  • Recruit and interview prospect faculty.
  • Advise and assist the College Dean in program and policy development.
  • Administer and manage department resources.
  • Participate in local, national, and professional associations to continue personal academic development and promote the University.
  • Establish and maintain public relations activities with governmental, educational, civic, and community agencies.
  • Cultivate alumni and other donor connections for financial support for departmental projects and programs.
  • Approve departmental listings in graduate and undergraduate catalogs.
  • Acquire department faculty input as required.
  • Administer collective bargaining master agreements.
  • Option to teach a school course or equivalent during one or more semesters. 
  • Provide mentorship to tenure track faculty in teaching, service, and research/scholarly activity.
  • Build research teams to target high-valued research opportunities.
  • Support ABET activities.

 

The successful candidate for this position should:

  • Have an earned Ph.D. in engineering.
  • Have the ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal forms.
  • Have a proven record of academic leadership in engineering and technology including securing and maintaining ABET accreditation of programs and developing new programs.
  • Have a proven strong record of effective university-level teaching with innovative instructional material including course, lab, and program development.
  • Have evidence of leading high-valued research teams and programs in their research field (examples include publications in peer-reviewed high-impact journals and securing external funding), qualifications commensurate with the standards for an appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure in any of the School programs.
  • Show strong background in managing personnel and resources including leading faculty.
  • Display strong communication skills and awareness of principles of shared governance in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Have experience implementing successful student recruitment and retention, and faculty recruitment programs.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage workplace conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working with and mentoring underrepresented faculty and students.
  • Previous administrative experience is preferred.
