General Summary

The School of Communication, Media & Theatre Arts seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Arts Administration to direct its BA and minor in Arts & Entertainment Management, its MA in Arts Administration, and its graduate certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship.

EMU’s Arts & Entertainment Management, founded in 1976, is one of the oldest undergraduate programs of its kind in the country and since 1985 offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees. Both programs provide students with robust study in both the theory of arts management and administration and ample opportunities to apply this theory into practice in and out of the classroom. Both programs prepare students for careers in either Non-profit Arts Management and Administration or as Arts and Cultural Entrepreneurs. EMU’s School of Communication, Media & Theatre Arts is the largest school in the College of Arts and Sciences. It offers majors/minors in communication, communication education, digital media, cinema studies and journalism, arts & entertainment management, entertainment design & technology, interpretation & performance studies, theatre, and musical theatre, with MA degrees in arts administration, communication, theatre, interpretation/ performance studies and MA/MFA in applied drama & theatre for the young.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Direct graduate and undergraduate arts management and administration programs– including advising, internship supervision, curriculum development, alumni relations, and recruiting.
• Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in arts management and administration as well as others that reflect professional and/or educational experience.
• Maintaining a creative/scholarly research agenda that may include traditional research studies published in journals and books, applied research such as cultural planning or other studies to support the development of the arts sector or individual cultural organizations, or professional work managing a cultural organization or creative business.
• Provide service to the school, university, and discipline.
• Grow relationships between the arts management and administration programs and community (local, regional, and national) arts organizations and creative businesses.
• Advise AMP! (arts management student organization).
• Maintain and grow interdisciplinary connections between the respective schools of Communication, Media & Theatre Arts, Art & Design, and Music & Dance as well as the College of Business. Perform related Departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Terminal degree, such as a MFA or PhD in arts administration or related discipline and equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum of three years of college-level teaching.
• Teaching experience in multiple relevant topics, such as: cultural policy, data literacy, arts marketing, finance, cultural planning, community engagement, production and distribution of art, fund development, entrepreneurship, organizational management, individual artist management, DEIA, research, or creative thinking.
• Demonstrated experience with multiple arts disciplines. Preference will be given to candidates with performing arts experience.
• Demonstrated experience in applied arts administration.
