General Summary

The Department of Leadership and Counseling invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in School Counseling, beginning August 2025. This faculty member will teach and advise graduate students in our CACREP-accredited school counseling program; engage in research and scholarship from a community-based perspective; and contribute to service activities within the department, college, and university. This tenure track position requires in-person, on-site engagement in teaching, service, and professional activities on campus, as well as the opportunity to teach some online courses.

We seek candidates who demonstrate the capacity to engage ethically in communities of practice with ethnically, racially, linguistically, and otherwise diverse populations and historically marginalized youth, families, and communities and who seek to enact such a commitment in collaboration with others in the department, college, campus, and broader community.

Our mission as a Counseling Program is to prepare graduates to work as professional counselors in higher education, K-12 school, and clinical mental health settings, using multiple modalities with diverse students and clients presenting with a range of concerns including addressing mental and emotional disorders. We seek to foster helping professionals who intentionally create inclusive spaces of responsiveness, respect, and appreciation for all forms of diversity, developing cultural proficiency in the service of promoting mental health and wellness to benefit local and global communities.

Our programs are committed to developing professional counselors who actively promote the well-being of individuals, institutions, and communities through the application of knowledge and skills enhancing the diversity, dignity, and development of the clients and communities they serve. We operate a Counseling Clinic that is open to the community as well as a School-Based Counseling Clinic that serves several schools in the local community.

About the Department of Leadership & Counseling
The Department of Leadership and Counseling at Eastern Michigan University develops caring and ethical educational leaders and professional counselors through co-constructed teaching and learning experiences, respectful service and community engagement, and intentional research and inquiry to promote equity. We prepare courageous leaders and mental health practitioners to assume prominent roles in effecting positive change in clients, students, families, and communities in local and global contexts.

The department offers three CACREP-accredited master’s degree programs in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, and college counseling and student affairs, as well as doctoral and master’s programs in Educational Leadership (K-12 and Higher Education & Student Affairs). These programs are committed to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice through their curriculum and community engagement.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teach graduate courses in the school counseling program, including creating transformative curriculum and supporting inclusive excellence.

Provide academic advising to diverse graduate students.

Engage in scholarship and maintain an active research agenda.

Participate in professional, community, and university service activities.

Perform related Departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Earned doctorate by August 2025 in Counseling/Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program or experience teaching full-time in a CACREP-accredited program.
• Strong background in school counseling practice, with a commitment to leadership, advocacy, and systemic change in P-12 settings.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion.
• Demonstrated commitment to preparing counselors from marginalized populations.
• Established research agenda.
• Identification with the counseling profession as evidenced by professional memberships and leadership activities.
• Eligibility for licensure as a professional counselor in Michigan and eventual eligibility for a Michigan School Counselor License.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Passionate advocacy for P-12 populations and settings.
• History of student-centered support and engagement.
• Experience with trauma-informed education and interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Expertise in areas such as restorative justice practices, neurodiversity, or educational technology.
• Sense of humor and cultural humility.
