General Summary

Provide leadership and assist the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs in planning, developing and administering the Graduate School, graduate programming, and related support services; sponsored activities; internal research support and development services; research compliance; and technology transfer and business engagement.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a member of the Provost's academic administrative team Provide advice and counsel to the Provost on development of long-range plans for sponsored research and other activities; graduate education; development and support of faculty and student research and scholarly/creative activities; technology transfer; and compliance with state and federal research regulations, including export controls and research safety. Supervise the Director of the Office of Research Development and Administration, the Director of the Graduate School, the Research Compliance Officer, the Technology Transfer Officer, and the faculty associate for Undergraduate Research Supervise the development of additional research and graduate departments as needed and appropriate. Oversee the continued development of the Graduate Education program, including the review, revision, and enforcement of the requirements and policies of graduate study; orientation; Graduate Research Conference; and writing and research support. Resolve student problems related to graduate programs of study and degree completion Collaborate with University Marketing to facilitate the marketing and promotion of the Graduate School and graduate programming; with the Office of the Registrar to coordinate systems, policy, and processes in support of graduate programming; and with Enrollment Management to support graduate enrollment planning and the admissions processes. Review, revise, and enforce graduate assistantship and graduate fellowship policies Manage the assistantship and fellowship tuition budget and allocation procedures Collaborate with Business and Finance and Human Resources to assure efficient graduate assistant/fellowship hiring and payroll processes. Facilitate the review and improvement of existing academic programs and the development and implementation of new graduate programs in collaboration with college deans, department heads and faculty curriculum committees Provide administrative support of and communication with Graduate Council and graduate coordinators. Encourage and support faculty research and other scholarly activities Manage Sabbatical Leave, Faculty Research Fellowship, Summer Research Award, other internal support programs for faculty and students Encourage and support graduate student and undergraduate student research and scholarly/creative activities. Provide administrative support for the University Research and Sabbatical Leave Committee. Provide divisional support for all facets of sponsored activities, including faculty research development, grant proposal preparation and approval, and post-award grant management Develop the institution's research infrastructure in cooperation with other administrators and faculty. Cultivate and solicit grants, contracts, and endowment and restricted gifts for research projects, facilities, and equipment Provide divisional support for Institutes and Centers Evaluate the effectiveness of such programs Provide training, support, and administrative oversight of all research committees that are established in response to federal and state regulations, including research involving human subjects, animal care and use, academic integrity, and biosafety Enforce compliance committee policies and protocols. Provide administrative and financial support to enforce policies regarding the vivarium operations, Chemical Hygiene Plan, export controls, and remotely piloted aircraft. Evaluate research capabilities and marketability of EMU intellectual property; receive and process invention disclosures, patent applications, and licensing agreements; and maintain active patents Connect businesses needs with faculty research expertise in order to nurture sponsored grants and contracts and patent licenses. Provide administrative support for the Transferable Technology Committee. Control operating budgets Approve the selection of administrative, professional and clerical support staff Represent graduate studies and research on University committees, meetings and the Graduate Council Perform related duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience and expertise in program planning, organization and administration typically acquired through the completion of a doctorate degree

Seven years of teaching experience in a university are required

Four years of senior-level administrative experience in a university is required

A broad understanding of higher-education issues, particularly those affecting graduate study and research experience in sponsored research is desirable.
