General Summary

Oversee the management of General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Research Accounting, Student Business Services, Tax and Payroll. Ensure that sufficient controls exist throughout the organization to protect assets and to accurately reflect the financial position of the University.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Provide accounting and control oversight, resolve issues, enforce laws, rules, regulations, and educate the campus community about such matters.

Provides leadership and supervision of finance services including compilation and monitoring of Revenue, Expenditures, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Tax, General Ledger, and Sponsored Research.

Directs and supervises the operations of student accounts receivable, including tuition and fees, installment plans, scholarships, student loans, state and federal financial aid.

Maintains, accounting policies and procedures, chart of accounts, and a system of controls over accounting transactions.

Prepare and/or review financial reports and analysis including but not limited to annual financial statements, Single Audit, NCAA report, and WEMU audit.

Communicate and collaborate with various stakeholders to resolve accounting related matters.

Evaluate business processes and make recommendation for improvement. Formally document procedures and assist with the development of desk reference guides. Ensure that the University has systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation.

Monitor departmental budgets and approve operating expenses for assigned areas of responsibility.

Oversee the administration of the Pcard program; ensure that audits are being conducted according to established procedure.

Interview, hire, and evaluate staff within designated areas.

Manage commercial banking relationships, external audit functions, and state and federal agency relationships.

Provide a visionary leadership role on behalf of Finance and create a well-respected and customer focused department.

Supervise overall operations including safety, security, and building maintenance where applicable.

Ensure that staff is sufficiently trained and ensure that professional development opportunities are available.

Leverage strengths of the current Finance team members; help to clarify roles and responsibilities to attain optimal individual and organizational goals.

Work with each unit to set annual goals, review progress and implementation.

Represent Finance by serving on committees and working groups that further the mission of the University.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Management, Finance or related field is required. A Master's Degree or CPA is preferred.

A minimum of five years progressive supervisory experience in accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, research accounting, accounts receivable, tax, and/or payroll operations is required.

Working knowledge of large ERP financial systems is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous employment in a University setting is preferred.
