General Summary

Maintain, repair, assemble, install, inspect, and operate electrical/electronic wiring, apparatuses, systems, components, fixtures, motors, and other equipment in accordance with specifications and codes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, fabricate, assemble, disassemble, install, maintain, and repair electrical/electronic wiring, fixtures, apparatus, starters, controls, and all motors.
  • Maintain, repair, install, and operate distribution equipment.
  • Cut, pull, bend, route, splice, thread, measure, and connect wiring and conduit to fixtures, facilities and equipment.
  • Connect power cables to equipment and install grounding leads.
  • Perform switching of medium voltage (4.8kV - 13.2kV) equipment.
  • Test continuity of electrical circuits using various electrical measuring instruments.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot malfunctioning electrical/electronic equipment using electrical, electronic, and mechanical testing equipment.
  • Cut and/or bore through walls, ceilings, and partitions.
  • Report any damage, malfunction, irregularities and/or potential hazards in buildings, grounds, equipment, vehicles or supplies to supervisor.
  • Erect and work from ladders, scaffolding, swing stages, boom trucks, and similar devices.
  • Perform periodic visual inspections of equipment, components, tools, fixtures, and vehicles to ensure against hazards.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance as directed.
  • Requisition materials and parts in accordance with the University's procurement system.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, manuals, schematics, manufacturers' literature and job specifications.
  • Train, oversee, and assist support staff and other trades as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain records, logs, reports, recommendations, and similar information as requested.
  • Record daily time as directed utilizing paper forms, pdas, and/or computers as directed by supervisory staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work and storage areas and all tools, vehicles and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Perform related departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Documented successful completion of a Department of Labor-recognized Electrician Apprenticeship Program is required.

Possession of a Department of Labor-recognized Electrician journeyperson card is required.

Possession of a State of Michigan Journey Electrician License is required.

Five (5) years within the last seven (7) years on the active payroll of a State of Michigan licensed electrical contractor performing tasks pertinent to EMU's needs is necessary.

The ability to read, write, interpret instructions, and perform basic and trade specific arithmetic which is typically acquired through completion of a high school education is necessary.

The ability to perform physically active work requiring frequent walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and crouching to perform routine work functions is necessary.

The ability to lift 50 pounds frequently and occasionally exert 100 pounds of force to move and/or transport equipment and supplies is necessary.

The ability to work from and on high places using ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and aerial work platforms is required.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade is necessary.

Possession of a valid driver's license recognized by the State of Michigan is necessary.

The ability and qualifications to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required.

Ability to meet departmental standards of reasonable personal hygiene is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

Possession of a State of Michigan Master Electrician License is desirable.

Additional Information:

Salary: FM 22 = $42.47 an hour/$88,338.00 annually.

Salary: FM 24 = $47.12 an hour/$98,010.00 annually with a Masters Electrical License.

Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, position is subject to after hours call.
