General Summary

Clean and service the swimming pools and spa areas in the Recreation/Intramurals and Warner buildings; monitor and maintain related equipment or filters and keep appropriate records. Responsible for the operation of all pool equipment including filters, pumps, vacuums, related equipment and training and supervision of student lifeguards.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Service, drain, fill, vacuum, and clean the pools, filters, pumps, testing equipment and adjacent areas.
  • Operate and maintain chlorinators, diatomaceous earth and sand filters, and other equipment for testing and maintaining appropriate water and chemical composition and levels in accordance with Health Department standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool and storage areas and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports as necessary.
  • Report any damage, malfunction, irregularities and/or potential hazards in buildings, grounds, equipment or supplies to supervisor. Perform minor repairs as necessary.
  • Ensure that pool chemicals are ordered and received.
  • Prepare for and monitor pool during swim meets or tournaments.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and evaluate lifeguards.
  • Perform related Departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to read, write, interpret instructions, and perform basic arithmetic, typically acquired through the completion of a high school education is necessary.

Knowledge of State of Michigan health codes pertaining to swimming pool operations is required. A certified Pool Operators license is preferred at the time of hire, and required within six months.

Expert knowledge of large swimming pool automated systems and chemistry, gained from one year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and training is necessary.

CPR, First Aid, Senior Lifesaving, and Water Safety Instructor is preferred at the time of hire and is required within three months.

Knowledge of swimming pool cleaning methods, materials and equipment is necessary.

Ability to perform physically active work of a medium-heavy nature, pushing, pulling, climbing, and walking to perform routine cleaning functions; and occasional lifting requiring the execution of up to 75 pounds of force to transport chemicals, supplies and equipment.

Working Conditions:

Majority of work performed indoors, but may require outside exposure in order to transport materials or run errands.

Routinely subject to noise, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working from ladders and high places and exposure to high
heat and swimming pool chemicals.

Routinely subject to atmospheric conditions such as: fumes, odors, mists, gases from pool chemicals or poor ventilation.

Required to wear respirator when working with pool chemicals.

Additional Information:

Salary: FM 16 = $23.37 an hour/$48,610.00 annually.

Shift: Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with some night/weekend expectations.
