General Summary

Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate classroom activities for a specific age group of children. Supervise practicum students and work with faculty from Teacher Education in the Academic component of the institute.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate classroom programs for a specific age group of children.
  • Provide input to Associate Director regarding the hiring of classroom student employees.
  • Supervise assigned University practicum students and model appropriate classroom teaching practices, and complete related forms, observations, and evaluations to assess practicum student's progress.
  • Consult regularly with faculty from academic departments on practicum and observation experiences for EMU students.
  • Maintain records, monitor and report on the progress of individual children in accordance with protocol established by the Children's Institute, receiving schools, referral agencies, and sponsoring agencies.
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences and home visits, and report to parents on child's adjustment and daily/periodic progress.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate student employees and volunteers.
  • Organize and maintain a safe, attractive, and stimulating classroom learning environment.
  • Support policies and goals of the Children's Institute, and participate in staff meetings, in-service training sessions, and research and special projects.
  • Take leadership responsibility for at least one major committee or special project per academic year, to be determined by Director.
  • Perform related Departmental duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of early childhood education, typically acquired through the completion of a master's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field, is required.

Michigan Elementary Teaching Certification, with Early Childhood Endorsement (ZA or ZS), is required.

Three years' early childhood teaching experience in the appropriate age group is required.

Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with very young children, parents and staff.
