General Summary

The Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders, College of Education at Eastern Michigan University is seeking applicants for one tenure track position in Special Education. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with a start in Fall, 2025.

The Special Education Program within the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a wide range of undergraduate categorical special education degrees leading to initial state licensure in one or more categories. The program also offers a range of certificate, master's, and specialist programs. The department is proud of its legacy for enacting teacher preparation and development that is deeply grounded in principles and practices that address diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. As a department, we seek candidates who demonstrate the capacity to engage ethically in communities of practice with ethnically, racially, linguistically, and otherwise diverse populations and historically marginalized youth, families, and communities and who seek to enact such a commitment in collaboration with others in the department, college, campus, and broader community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Teach in two or more areas of the department programs/majors
• Provide academic and scholarly research advising to students
• Engage in research and scholarly activities appropriate to an R2 institution
• Provide service to department, college, and university committees, and impact local and global communities
• Create and co-construct transformative curriculum and enact pedagogy to reflect and support inclusive excellence
• Meet all contractual obligations for tenure-track faculty

Minimum Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree in Special Education or related field, completed by date of appointment from an accredited institution.
• Prior special education teaching experience in a P-12 school.
• Demonstrated commitment to and achievement in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in higher education settings
• An emergent/active community-engaged scholarly agenda and accomplishments related to the appointment
• Experience in and/or knowledge about preparing special education teachers in culturally-responsive and -sustaining pedagogy
• Experience and versatility in inclusive pedagogy. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice through their teaching, research, and service

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in cross-categorical special education teaching and scholarship
• Experience with early childhood special education
• Previous higher education teaching experience
• Experience acquiring or pursuing external research funding

Special Instructions:

The successful candidate will serve an eight-month, tenure track appointment with summer employment contingent on student demand and funding. A competitive salary will be based on qualifications and prior experience with a tenure track appointment at the assistant professor rank.
