General Summary

Perform routine and heavy cleaning, and upkeep of University buildings and facilities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain floor surfaces and stairways by sweeping, mop-ping, stripping, sealing, refinishing, and polishing, using hand and/or mechanical cleaning, scrubbing and buffing equipment.
  • Clean mirrors, blackboards, interior glass and windows, drinking fountains, ceilings, walls, doors and other appliances and equipment.
  • Vacuum and clean carpeted floors, stairways and upholstered furniture.
  • Clean carpeted floors as needed.
  • Clean lavatories and fixtures.
  • Empty waste containers, ash trays and cigarette urns; and pick up refuse in buildings. Empty waste containers outside building entrances.
  • Stock lavatories and other applicable rooms with necessary supplies such as soap, toilet paper and towels, and maintain an inventory of various supplies and equipment in accordance with specific instructions.
  • Replace burned-out light bulbs.
  • Clean, dust and polish items such as cases, ledges, furniture, equipment, fixtures, furnishings, venetian blinds and window casings.
  • Remove snow and ice from building entrances, as directed.
  • Move and arrange furniture, supplies, equipment and furnishings, as required, to perform assigned cleaning or to set up for various meetings and events.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work and storage areas and all supplies and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Report any damage, malfunction, irregularities and/or potential hazards in equipment or supplies to supervisor.
  • Lock and unlock rooms and buildings.
  • Perform related Departmental duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to read, write, interpret instructions and perform basic arithmetic, typically acquired through the completion of a high school education, is necessary.

Ability to perform physically active work of a medium-heavy nature, requiring frequent walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling and crouching activity to perform routine cleaning functions; and frequent lifting requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to lift a mop bucket, vacuum, ladder, or other supplies and equipment, is necessary.

Ability to meet Departmental standards of reasonable personal hygiene is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of cleaning techniques and operation of custodial equipment is desirable.
