General Summary

The Michigan College and University Partnership (MICUP) program, funded by the King-Chávez-Parks (KCP) Initiative, is dedicated to supporting under-served students transitioning from Community College to Eastern Michigan University. MICUP provides academic preparation, mentoring, financial education, and scholarships to assist academically, economically, and socially disadvantaged students in successfully integrating into a four-year university environment.

The MICUP Graduate Assistant (GA) Success Coach plays a vital role in supporting transfer students through personalized academic coaching, outreach, and resource navigation. This position assists students in developing learning strategies, study habits, and financial literacy while fostering academic confidence and persistence. The GA will work within the Holman Success Center (HSC) to provide holistic support through mentorship, proactive outreach, and engagement with campus services.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Your role as the MICUP program graduate assistant is multi-faceted and includes managing an assigned caseload of MICUP students utilizing Starfish, providing individualized academic and personal success coaching and monitoring student progress. Additionally, you may be assigned related tasks and projects such as:

  • Oversee, monitor and maintain the MICUP Canvas Learning Management System by creating relevant modules, grading assignments, posting announcements, and updating the Success Plan accordingly
  • Foster a sense of belonging and community among transfer students through engagement activities and peer connections.
  • Support MICUP and HSC initiatives by representing the program and department at campus and community events, monitoring and creating social media, and creating and distributing marketing materials 

From this assistantship, you will gain knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in multiple aspects of student support.

Minimum Qualifications:

Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write professional emails and create polished documents, excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Successful applicants will have a degree of technological savvy, sufficient to use our learning management system (Canvas) as well as online scheduling and note-taking tools. You must have the desire to learn and grow while also encouraging the same in your co-workers.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of Eastern Michigan University and its policies and student population, previous teaching and/or group facilitation experience. Priority is given to candidates who are able to commit to 2 consecutive years. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate students in HESA, counseling, or Social Work programs.

Special Instructions:

A Graduate Assistantship covers Fall and Winter semesters. Eligibility for a GA position includes the following:

  • You must be registered for at least 6 graduate credit hours each semester
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in all courses
  • Show satisfactory progress toward program completion

This 100% position carries a stipend of $10,200 per year with a 20-hour-per-week work commitment. You would also receive a tuition scholarship for up to 18 credit hours per year (9 graduate-level credit hours per semester). Fees are not covered by this award.
