General Summary

Performs inspection, testing, repairs and preventive maintenance on life safety devices such as fire alarms, smoke and heat detectors, manual pull stations, horn/strobes, speaker/strobes, strobes, flow switches, tamper switches door holding devices, fire extinguishers, fire suppression systems, fire pumps, fire hydrants, exit signage, emergency lighting and special hazard systems.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains electronic / electric panels (FACP), boards and devices of the buildings primary and secondary fire alarm systems. May include preparation of reports, data and signal processing.
  • Perform inspection, testing and preventive maintenance tasking to fire alarm system devices and components such as smoke detectors, manual pull stations, horns, speakers, strobes, heat detectors, tamper switches, flow switches, door holders, fire extinguishers, fire pumps, suppression systems, fire hydrants and special hazard systems.
  • Assist in inventory control of devices, components and equipment.
  • Stay abreast of development in areas of responsibility including changes to codes, standards and regulations or innovations in related best management practices through continuing education and/or participation in professional organizations.
  • Must acquire CEU points to maintain certifications.
  • Prepare brief technical reports when requested.
  • Responsible for assuring life safety systems are maintained, administered appropriately and are in good working order.
  • Assures that University impairment procedures are enacted in a timely manner.
  • Interfaces with customers in a positive way to assure operating and service needs are met.
  • Perform installation and start up duties and final checkout of systems operations.
  • Understand manual and verbal instructions that are technical in nature.
  • Ability to cooperate with others on group projects Report any damage, malfunctions or potential hazards in buildings, grounds, equipment, vehicles or supplies to supervisor.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work and storage areas, mechanical rooms and all tools, vehicles and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Operate motor vehicles.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, manufactures manuals, specifications and sketches.
  • Perform inspection, testing and diagnostics of connectivity issues.
  • Responsible for layout work and installation of CAT 6 and other low voltage cabling.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) Level II or NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Fire Inspection I certification is required within one (1) year of hire.

Five (5) years of experience within the last seven (7) years of variable experience in electronics, inspection, testing and maintenance of low voltage equipment is necessary.

Ability to read, write, interpret instructions and perform basic arithmetic, acquired through the completion of a high school education or GED equivalent, is necessary.

Ability to meet Departmental Standards of reasonable personal hygiene is necessary.

Possession of a valid driver's license is necessary.

Ability to perform physically active work of a medium nature, requiring frequent walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling and crouching activity to perform routine work functions, and requiring frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds and, occasionally, 100 pounds of force to move and/or transport equipment and supplies is necessary.

Possession of a BICSI ITS Technician Certification or be willing to obtain this certification within one year of employment.

Two (2) years of experience in the data/communications field and have demonstrated an understanding of CAT 5, CAT 6 and Fiber Optics is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of electronics to calculate fractions, decimals and percentages, is desirable.

Additional Information:

Salary: FM 22 = $37.83 an hour/$78,686 annually.

Shift: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
