General Summary

The Communications and Operations Manager will cultivate relationships and direct communications between Engage@EMU and EMU faculty and staff, local business entities, nonprofit organizations and community members. The position will also manage overall office relations for Engage@EMU as it relates to community partnerships and programs.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage regular communications with EMU students, faculty, staff and community members across multiple platforms and venues.
  • Manage University-wide events/initiatives such as Thankful, United Way Kick-Off, conferences, etc.
  • Develop a communications/public relations strategy to boost awareness for Engage@EMU among the internal campus and external local communities.
  • Manage office-wide initiatives such as: social media marketing; marketing campaigns; video production; online messaging; website maintenance; email communications; University community calendar maintenance; advertising.
  • Create, distribute and promote monthly Engage@EMU newsletter.
  • Represent Engage@EMU and University at internal campus and external community events and meetings:
    • Examples include: Parkridge community meetings; Summerfest; United Way Workplace Campaign; Heartwalk; Ypsilanti Community Schools; First Fridays; YpsiGlow; United Way for Southeast Michigan; Ann Arbor Spark, Riverside Arts Center.
  • Collaborate with relevant EMU departments in online promotion.
  • Direct operations for Engage@EMU:
    • Supervise, train and evaluate Student Employees and coordinate schedules.
    • Supervise, train and evaluate Graduate Assistants and coordinate schedules.
    • Schedule regular office and team meetings and prepare agendas.
    • Process expense reports for grant-funded programs/projects.
    • Support grant reports and proposals as related to community outreach.
    • Maintain office supplies and manage orders.
  • Develop strategic plan for Engage@EMU and support program Directors in developing individual strategic plans.
  • Identify and initiate grant-funded and revenue-generating opportunities for the University, in collaboration with community organizations:
    • Identify University personnel to work in tandem with such grant-funded opportunities.
    • Provide project design, instructional support and vision for community programs and University outreach initiatives.
    • Evaluate and track engagement for Engage@EMU programs and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications:

A master’s degree from an accredited institution is required.

A minimum of three years of end-to-end project development and management experience is required. This experience should be specific to external engagement initiatives (work with community partners such as not-for-profit organizations, etc.), and should include project inception, stakeholder management, budgeting, monitoring, and project completion.

Public and/or private grant design, oversight, and/or management experience is required.

The ability to work both independently and collaboratively, while maintaining professionalism is required.

Must have the ability to work varied hours and shifts, including nights and weekends to meet programmatic needs.

Must have excellent organizational skills, be able to adapt to rapidly changing environments, and be able to balance multiple projects at once.
