General Summary

Patrol University parking facilities; issue citations for violations of parking ordinances; and report on parking facilities and equipment in need of repair.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patrol University parking lots, structures, and streets, on foot or using a motor vehicle; and issue citations for vehicles in violation of parking ordinances.
  • Work closely with police personnel and traffic control in assisting with the public safety of the university.
  • Report on situations where removal of vehicles may be warranted.
  • Respond to inquiries and/or complaints from the public, students, faculty, and staff concerning parking rules and regulations, directions, and parking facilities or equipment in need of repair.
  • Collect coins deposited in parking meters and pay-in-lanes.
  • Report on parking equipment and facilities in need of repair; and perform minor repairs on parking meters as required.
  • Prepare incident reports and daily activity logs.
  • Assist in directing traffic in emergencies and during University events. Mandatory overtime is required in order to provide services for special events, move in, football games and commencements.
  • Represent the University in court when parking citations are contested.
  • Perform parking booth attendant duties, as required, to cover for employee absences and lapses in coverage.
  • Unlock and/or jump start vehicles on university premises as necessary.
  • Supervise and train student employees working in parking.
  • Perform related departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to read, write, interpret instructions, and perform basic arithmetic calculations, typically acquired through the completion on a high school diploma, is required.

Ability to operate a motorized vehicle, and possession of a valid Michigan Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, are required.

The ability to communicate with people who may be irritated, verbally or physically combative and diffuse adverse situations while maintaining a calm composure is required.

The ability to lift up to fifty pounds in order to move traffic barricades, traffic signs and empty coins from parking meters is required.

Must be mechanically inclined to service and perform minor repairs on parking equipment and understand basic function of automobiles so as to perform jump starts and unlocks.

Basic personal computing skills to utilize word processing, spreadsheet applications, e-mail and perform file management functions, are required.

Must be able to document information with a high level of accuracy both on paper and via the computer is required.
