General Summary

The Payroll Lead provides support for Payroll & Disbursement Manager and staff. Directs and leads the daily operations of the Payroll office in support of the Payroll & Disbursement Manager to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides support for Payroll & Disbursement Manager and staff as needed.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Payroll departments and develop and control all tasks necessary to accomplish the University's objectives.
  • Coordinate the issuance and control of all payroll as authorized by University policy.
  • Directs the control over and processing of all payroll withholdings as authorized by state and federal law or by the employee, making timely remittance of such to the appropriate agency as designated by law and University policy.
  • Responsible for State of Michigan MPSERS reporting.
  • Coordinate preparation of payroll related tax returns and other compliance (W-2, 1042-S, etc.), and dissemination of tax payment data.
  • Supports the Payroll and Disbursement Manager in the maintenance and improvement of the payroll information systems to ensure the accuracy of payroll, as well as internal and external financial/tax reporting.
  • Supervise the journal entry and reconciliation processes of all payroll accounting records.
  • Assist in being a liaison function with other departments. Communicate and collaborate with various stakeholders to resolve payroll or disbursement related matters.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of five years of Payroll experience within the last seven years (required).

Knowledge of payroll, accounting principles and procedures typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field, is necessary.

Working knowledge of IRS rules and regulations as they pertain to payroll.

Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations as they pertain to payroll.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of Ellucian Banner ERP system or Payroll modules is desirable.
