General Summary

Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate classroom activities for a specific age group of very young children. Supervise student employees, assistants, and volunteers.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate classroom activities for a specific age group of very young children.
  • Provide input to Director regarding the hiring of classroom student employees.
  • Model appropriate classroom teaching practices for students, observers, and participants.
  • Maintain records, and monitor and report on the progress of individual children in accordance with the protocol established by the Children's Institute, receiving schools, referral agencies, and sponsoring agencies.
  • Conduct and/or participate in parent-teacher conferences and home visits, and report to parents on child's adjustment and daily/periodic progress.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate student employees and volunteers.
  • Organize and maintain a safe, attractive, and stimulating classroom learning environment.
  • Support policies and goals of the Children's Institute; and participate in staff meetings, in-service training sessions, and research and special projects.
  • Take leadership responsibility for at least one short-term or subcommittee activity or special project per academic year.
  • Perform related Departmental duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of early childhood education, typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field, is required.

One year toddler teaching experience is required.

Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with very young children, parents, staff, faculty, and students is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

Michigan Elementary Teacher Certification, with Early Childhood Endorsement (ZA or ZS), is preferred.
