General Summary

The School of Engineering (SE) at the Game Above College of Engineering and Technology, Eastern Michigan University is accepting applications for a School Director. The successful candidate will administer and direct the developmental, personnel, financial, and operational activities of the School of Engineering in collaboration with faculty. The SE offers ABET-accredited programs in mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering technology, and product design engineering technology. It also offers computer and electrical engineering technology and graduate programs in engineering management, quality management, computer-aided engineering, and polymers and coatings.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Manage school budget for personnel, services, supplies, maintenance and equipment, and grants and contracts.
2. Ensure alignment of departmental goals with the College and University goals.
3. Support faculty leading the development of new initiatives and programs or the revision of existing ones.
4. Evaluate faculty performance for tenure, promotion, and supplemental salary adjustment recommendations to the Dean of the College.
5. Schedule school course offerings with input from Program Coordinators and Instruction Committee.
6. Support students and faculty regarding such matters as curricular requirements, transfer of courses, availability of classes, and academic problems and/or grievances.
7. Recruit and interview prospective faculty.
8. Advise and assist the College Dean in program and policy development.
9. Participate in local, national, and professional associations to continue personal academic development and promote the University.
10. Establish and maintain public relations activities with governmental, educational, civic, and community agencies.
11. Cultivate alumni and other donor connections for financial support for departmental projects and programs.
12. Approve departmental listings in graduate and undergraduate catalogs.
13. Solicit department faculty input as required by contractual agreement.
14. Administer collective bargaining master agreements.
15. Mentor tenure-track faculty in teaching, service, and research/scholarly activity.
16. Build research teams to target high-valued research opportunities.
17. Lead ABET and accreditation/assessment activities.


The SE Director may choose to teach a school course or equivalent during one or more semesters.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate for this position should:

1. Have an earned Ph.D. in engineering or a closely related field and qualified for a tenured professor rank in one of the programs in School of Engineering.
2. Communicate effectively in written and verbal forms.
3. Have a proven record of academic leadership in engineering and technology including securing and maintaining ABET accreditation of programs and developing new programs.
4. Have a proven strong record of effective university-level teaching with innovative instructional material including course, lab, and program development.
5. Have evidence of leading high-valued research teams and programs in their research field (examples include publications in peer-reviewed high-impact journals and securing external funding).
6. Show a strong background in managing personnel and resources including leading faculty.
7. Display strong communication skills and awareness of principles of shared governance in a collective bargaining environment.
8. Have experience implementing successful programs aimed at improving or maintaining both student and faculty recruitment and retention.
9. Demonstrate ability to manage workplace conflict resolution.
10. Demonstrate commitment to working with and mentoring underrepresented faculty and students.
